Du sidder ved et stort babusskrivebord med Hay bordben, rummet har flotte ens metallamper med neon stofledninger, 2 kubereoler, varme, el, hurtig netforbindelse og rengøring.

Today I received a really lovely magazine called Uppercase from Canada. It is a magazine for creative and curious and it is really nice. Their blog has a lot of inspiration so check it out. You can also buy good looking books on their webshop.

I found this really nice book to pre order at their online shop: Dottie Angel, The Suicase series Volume 2: Dottie Angel. It is a book about the lives of designers and artists. It looks great!

Sayonara Japan!

The last day we spend in Tokyo, shopping and packing our big suitcases filled with stuff, ceramics, sake, kimonos, books and magazines. It´s been a great trip and such a beautiful culture to get to know.

Thanks for following my posts from Japan. I hope to go back there again some day soon. Here are my last snaps from Tokyo.

We had dinner at Higashi Yama, a really nice place serving Japanese food with a modern twist.

Kawai! The Japanese just love kitch. We did these in a photo booth in one of the many game arcades around Tokyo . You can decorate your pictures with all sorts of cute and tacky stuff. Check out the size of our eyes - it's so funny!

We visited Opening Ceremony in Shibuya. The have a really nice 8 level conceptual store. It is decorated like a home on each floor, so the clothes are hanging in a pink kitchen on the 1st floor and the next floor is made up like a bedroom (Sorry, I wasn´t allowed to take pictures in there but it was really well made and a very cool concept for a store)

We went shopping at the Japanese street wear label A Bathing Ape shop in Omotesando. Such a cool store with white tiles all around.

Next time I go to Japan, I would love to go when the cherry blossom is in bloom. It looks so amazing.

Close to nature

Our last days in Japan were spend at this wonderful Japanese inn Hanafubuki in Izu Kogen surrounded by mountains, the Pacific Ocean and wild nature. It was a magical place and we felt like being in another world. We stayed in a Japanese villa with balcony looking out at wild nature. There were private hot springs with water coming from the mountains full of minerals. The food was simply the best I ever tasted and every plate we had was a little piece of art. The prefect place to think back on all our experiences in Japan before returning home.

Kimonos

I am in love with the kimonos here. They are so beautiful and colourful. They are really expensive to buy from new but I bought two vintage ones at a really fair price. The fabrics are really amazing and the colours and patterns are very inspiring. The women over here still wear a kimono to dress up for ceremonies and festivals.

Hiroshima and colorful origami for peace

On our Japan trip we have spend a few days Hiroshima. It is a city with a tragic past. In 1945 the USA dumped an Atomic bomb over the city killing hundred thousands of people. Being at the Peace memorial museum an learning about the tragic event and what it caused of pain and radioactive pollution on people afterwards and knowing that many countries still poses nuclear power and do atomic tests today, made a huge impression on me. I saw these great colorful collages made by folded origami birds that children had made outside the museum. They are really great and inspiring.

This was how Hiroshima looked like after the A-bomb. 3 km2 of city burned away immediately after the A-bomb.

Japanese food heaven

The food here in Japan is so enjoyable. There is so much more to the Japanese kitchen than sushi. And the arrangement of the food is just great, small portions on a small plate and very aestetically served.

Great sushi! And it's cheap here. If you go to the places where the sushi is on a conveyer belt, it's even cheaper. You just grap the plate you like and afterwards they count your plates and you pay.

Sukiyaki - beef, vegetables, mushrooms are cooked in a hot pot in a delicious sauce of soy sauce and sugar.

Busy kitchen at the small place Ayoa in Nagamaguro, Tokyo.

In Japan they have pictures of the food they serve, either photos or funny plastic models, outside the restaurant. It's easy to order even though you don't speak Japanese, you just point.

We eat a lot of ramen, noodles. This was a nice little place in Kyoto serving Soba, buckwheat noodles.

Nice dinner at Sosuke Ryokan.

Teppanyaki uses a hot grill to cook the food. Here it's shrimps and fish with cabbage and soy sauce on the side.

A cool place in Hiroshima serving teryaki - sticks with grilled meet, vegetables, tofu etc.

Bento boxes for lunch.

As for the sweets the Japanees don't have candy like we know it in Europe, but they do have a lot of cakes packed in beautiful boxes.

Green tea sweets, plum sweet (like jelly) and ohhh we found jelly beans in Muji, a great shop with so much nice stuff and a cool, simple design language!

Train ride to Kanazawa, Art museum and tea ceremony

We have spent a few days in Kanazawa. We are travelling around by train, a very pleasant way to see the Japanese landscape. The fast train Shinkanzen takes us hundreds of kilometers in short time. In Kanazawa we visited 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art by SANAA arcitects. The art museum is based on a round circle layout with glass facade. It is a really beautiful museum and you should go there if you ever come to Japan.

Tea ceremony in Kerukuen garden, Kanazawa.

We had green matcha tea and a sweet Japanese kind of cake made from beans. It was served by a beautiful woman in kimono.

Shinkansen, really fast train. The women in pink are cleaners who is waiting for the train on the platform, ready to clean the train in a hurry.

When traveling on the train we buy a Bento box for lunch. They have a very big selection at the stations so we stock up before leaving or when changing trains. The lunch box is so well put together and full of healthy food.

Another snack on the go is rice balls wrapped in nori, seaweed. Inside fillings can be tuna, cucumber or fish. It a great healthy snack.

There are drinks vending machines everywhere, on the streets, platforms, trains. I like the cold green tea. It's not too sweet and it's very refreshing.

Walking around in the streets of the Japanese cities you find many nice and fun posters. Some are really old style and others more sleek. Also the way of packaging sweets, food, drinks, gifts is really beautiful and delicate. See some of my pics here.

Old Japan

We have been in Takayama in the mountainside in Northern Japan for a few days. This city was so quiet and calm and the completely the opposite from Tokyo. We stayed at a great traditional Ryokan (which mean an old style Japanese inn) and we had some great food there. We went to see lots of temples, shrines and old houses, the atmosphere was very calm and beautiful.

Beautiful mattress to lay on the tatami mat to make a bed. There was tea set in a beautiful laquer box in every room.

They had an old hearth, Irori in Japanese, at the place we were staying to make hot water for tea and to warm the living room.

Tokyo is too crazy! Every Sunday young people dress up an head to Harajuku (a Tokyo neighbourhood). They dress up in a variety of styles and walk up and down the streets to get noticed. We went there and looked at people, it was really interesting. They have so many fascinating youth subcultures and styles: Gothic, Lolita, mori (Forest girl) to name a few - and Rockabillies, they were dressed up and danced all the moves to the Grease Soundtrack while singing and shaking the hips. Very funny to watch!

Tokyo is full of contrast! New vs. old, futuristic vs. traditionel... After watching the Harajuku girls we went to the Meiji Shrine near by, where we were lucky to see a wedding ceremony.

Manga advertising

Today went to Mori Art museum and saw a really nice show called "Sensing Nature" about the Japanese perception of nature. We saw this amazing installation there by the Japanese artist Tokujin Yoshioka. Feathers were blown around in a big white box, making the illusion of snow fall. It was very beautiful.

Japanese magazines and zines

Parco is a great department store in Shibuya which has Libro book store in the basement. They have a HUGE selection of books, manga comics and magazines here. It was so amazing - I have never ever experienced a greater selection like this one! I went crazy in there and bought loads of inspiring books and magazines to fill up my suitcase.

I bought Fruits (with streetpics of Harajuku girls), Spoon, NYLON Japan, ku:nel and some Japanese fashion and lifestyle magazines. They have magazines about everything here.

Nice book covers.

I got some really nice design books as well. I am looking forward to studying this one about girls zines and the making of them (though I don't understand the Japanese text). I want to make some zines when I get back. Read about a zine workshop here in tokyo, it looks great fun!

I found this nice zine called murmur. It is published by a Japanese fashion brand and it's theme is "To live beautiful and sweet" and it talks about eco-fashion and sustainable lifestyles. It's really nice!

Konnichiwa Tokyo!

Love the bus! The Japanese graphic language is sometimes a bit childish but very fun.

Cowbooks is a really nice book shop selling beautiful second hand books. There is two branches in Tokyo, we went to the one in Ayoama where the shop is right next to a cool cafe called Dragonfly. Great place for food and cakes and people watching.

Cute note books, masking tape and stickers bought at the department store Loft in Shibuya. The basement is filled with goodies so if you want to stock up your stationary this is the Tokyo place to go!

Beautiful calligraphy and Ukiyo-e (wood block prints) at Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art. Tjeck out the work of Hokusai, a great Japanese artist and Ukiyo-e painter.

Tokyo is amazing! There are so many impressions after the first days. Stunning sky scrabers, neon signs, busy street life, glass facades, noisy game arcades, cool teenagers and business men in black suits. The Japanese graphic language is so cool and inspiring and I love their simple but strong graphic design language. Here are some snaps shot from my first days.

On Thursday 7th October 2010 Underwerket Projects will be hosting a talk with Elisabeth Dunker from Fine little Day about her blog, her work and inspiration. We talk to Elisabeth before coming over....

What have you been doing this week. Are you normally busy?
- I have tried to rehabilitate me from work a bit this week. Longing for more time to take care of my self and my family. Would love to start cooking and bake again (has been my husbands doing for the past 10 years). Want to clean the apartment, buy some fresh flowers, go and cut my hair, get massage...

I am normally too busy.

Do you travel a lot to seek inspiration. If yes where did you go last time and why this place?
No I don't travel a lot. It is actually something I have come to realize in "old age", I don't need to travel so much. I really like it best here. What I would like to do is to discover my own country a bit more, and the rest of Scandinavia. Scandinavia is beautiful, and there is so much I haven't seen and experienced yet.

The last time I travel abroad was this spring, to Prague with my mum and sister

If no, what else do you do to seek inspiration?

Feels like I'm repeating myself here but the absolutely best way to get inspiration for me is to visit fleas and second hand stores. I love the feeling of not knowing what I'm gonna find, and I appreciate the wide range of items that it always is at that kind of places. Also I like the thought of that the items have a history, and when you get it you kind of take care of that history.

What kind of artist do you admire? And why?
Oh, where should I start? I just have to mention a couple of names that pops up in my head when reading this question. Generally I'm very fond of outsider art. One reason for that is that the outsider artist obviously have had a strong call, a sparkle in his or hers artistry, I admire people with sparkles. And there is also often a nerve in that kind of artistry that goes straight to my heart.

James Castle, Henry Darger, Bill Traylor is a couple of well known outsider art artists that I like. Others more contemporary artists who comes up in my mind is Anu Touminen, Claire Loder and Misiaki Kawai. But there is of course a lot of more people out there that I go nuts about.

Have you ever been in Copenhagen before?
Several times, I like Copenhagen. But I can't say that I know my way around there very well. I guess I keep going where most tourists going. Two places I rather don't miss when I'm there is Créme de la créme a´la Edgar, and Riz Raz. I'm a vegetarian and they have good vegetarian buffet there.

If some of us are going to Sweden this year, what will you recommend we should do and where should we go?
Well if you come to Gothenburg you should stroll in the areas around Haga and Linné. Andra Långgatan has a couple of nice shops and cafés. So does the rest of Linné. Take a look at my blog here (scroll down) for some more tips.

Me and Lisa love wallpapers! It's a great way to decorate a wall. Timorous Beasties is a design studio based in Glasgow, that do textiles and wallpapers. They have defined an iconoclastic style of design once described as “William Morris on acid.” Typical is the Glasgow Toile. At first glance it looks like one of the magnificent vistas portrayed on early 1800s Toile de Jouy wallpaper, but closer inspection reveals a nightmarish vision of contemporary Glasgow where crack addicts, prostitutes and the homeless are depicted against a forbidding backdrop of dilapidated tower blocks and scavenging seagulls. I think it's a great idea and I love design with a twist, where you experience something further when you look into it.

First issue of Stella magazine is out soon.

Stella magazine is a new bi-annual magazine for women. Stella features women who are interesting because of what they do and think rather than because of how they look. It was born out of the will to put personality before glamour.

The magazine is founded and art directed by Laura Terp Hansen. The first issue is featuring women who do amazing work with their hands, like the London based textile designer Katherine May who explores patchwork and quilting. Inside the magazine you will find the work of many talented photographers and illustrators, among others Jenny Hart, Katrine Rohrberg, Camilla Stephan and Miuyki Sakai. You can have a sneak peak here.

We are in love with the london based design duo SWASH (Sarah Swash and Toshio Yamanaka), besides working together the design duo are also a couple, and their dog a whippet called Candy, manages to figure on many of their designs. The Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is great inspiration and her work is really amazing. Her paintings, collages, soft sculptures, performance art and environmental installations all share an obsession with repetition, pattern, and accumulation. I love her dotted worlds and colour combinations!

On Thursday 2nd September 2010 Underwerket Projects will be hosting a talk with Amelia Gregory from Amelia's Magazine about sustainability and design for activism. We talk to Amelia before coming over....

When you are coming to Copenhagen for the talk, you are traveling by car and ferry. That is a different way of traveling compared to many people who would just get on a plane. Could you tell a little about that and why?

I've never flown a lot but for the last five issues of Amelia's Magazine in print I flew to China, Mexico, Russia, Brasil and India to do interviews with the most interesting creative people I could find. During this time I became much more aware of the environmental costs of my Western lifestyle, and met many people who had chosen not to fly anymore as a way to keep their personal CO2 emissions down. I felt increasingly uncomfortable with flying as a means of transport, so two years ago I made the decision that I would only fly long haul if I really really needed to do so, and I wouldn't fly short haul again when there were other options available. This is because I believe short haul flights are entirely unnecessary. We've become to accustomed to a completely unsustainable lifestyle and we need to work towards a world where there are plenty of other easily available and affordable options for travel. For this reason I decided to get the ferry over to Copenhagen. Unfortunately it's still quite expensive to travel this way if you leave it to the last minute (as is the train) but the costs are quite reasonable if you book early enough.

Your website features a lot of music, could you recommend some music we should listen to?

At the moment I'm listening to quite a lot of folk, and I highly recommend the music of Laura Gibson, Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou, Dry the River and Lulu and the Lampshades (which also happens to be fronted by a very talented former Amelia's Magazine section editor). For live performance I really rate The Golden Filter and Gabby Young and Other Animals, both of whom were outstanding at Secret Garden Party this year. Danny and the Champions of the World were fabulous at Glastonbury and I've seen Scandinavia's finest First Aid Kit perform numerous times but never cease to be blown away by them.

Is there anything we should read or see before your talk in Copenhagen?

Well, I would hope that anyone attending the talk will at least have a passing knowledge of my website - which is updated several times daily. If not, do drop by and see what you think of our content!

Have you ever been in Copenhagen before? Besides the talk what else are you going to do and see in Copenhagen?

I was in Copenhagen during the Cop15 in December 2009 - we stayed in a huge school in the suburbs, sleeping like sausages packed together in the dorms. It was a really fantastic experience - we rode around everywhere on bikes and then took part in a big Bike Block action outside the Bella Centre on the final day of action. It was a lot of hard work because our networks were so fragmented across the city and I only closely escaped arrest several times, but I really enjoyed feeling part of much bigger movement towards climate justice. I hope that we will make it to some of the places recommended by Laura on my trip to Copenhagen. Apart from that, I am looking forward to lots of time spent in beautiful places, and lots of rest.

If some of us are going to London (your home town) this autumn, what will you recommend we should see? And where should we go for art, music and food?

Oh well, I don't eat out that much so I'm not sure I would be able to recommend much from that point of view, but for art I would definitely recommend making a trip over east to Shoreditch and Hackney to see some of the smaller galleries that have sprung up everywhere, as well as of course visiting all the bigger ones: the Tate and the Whitechapel in particular. There's a great exhibition of portraits by America painter Alice Neel on at the Whitechapel until 17th September. For music good venues include the Union Chapel in Islington, which is a vast old church with amazing seating. And there are loads of really good small venues where you might get a chance to see up and coming artists before they become well known.

AZITO - online gallery of contemporary art

We love jananese culture, crafts, art, food etc. In Autumn Laura are going to explore Japan(lucky her) and next year I am going to Japan to be inspired and do some work. But before we go we have found this cool online gallery called AZITO and here are some different art work we would love to buy in the online gallery. The artist are Ai Yamaguchi, Akira Ikezoe, Keiichi Tanaami and Etsuko Fukaya. If we are lucky we will soon be the owner of one of these fine art pieces.

Tauba Auerbach

This beautifull work comes from Tauba Auerbach, an artist from San Fransisco. Her work is really great. Las year I saw her show HERE AND NOW/AND NOWHERE at Deitch Projects in New York.

She did perfomances at this pipe organ, Auerglass. The Auerglass is a two person pump organ created by Tauba Auerbach and Cameron Mesirow. Cool.

Bruce Goff Bavinger and other inspiring stuff

We are still dreaming in Underwerket Projects, and my father in laws architect Sunday Sytmen recommended us to look at Bruce Goff Bavinger's houses. And they are pretty amazing, on my way looking at Bruce Goff Bavinger's houses I also found "the tunnel house" by artists Dan Havel and Dean Ruck, and "House with balls" designed by Matharoo.

Living in a tree

Today we are dreaming of seeing life from another perspective. And a fantastic way to do that could be to stay in houses like this, I imagine it could be good for your mind. And I guess that leaving the ground for some time, would create some new thoughts. We would really love to try this. And it could be amazing to do some sketches for a project living in a tree. What a daydream, this idea really makes me happy.

A designstudio we like: M+M Paris

M+M Paris is a really interesting art and design studio to follow. They do very inspiring work and recently they designed an alphabet to Prada, THE PRADALPHABET. Each letter in THE PRADALPHABET is drawn - or rather built - as an architecture, a cosmogony or an autonomous engine. But each one is related to all the other letters, the same way a regular alphabet is a set of different but comparable signs.

Earlier this year they did a really nice perfume for the French label A.P.C. called "Sustain". It is very nice to see a different kind of perfume packaging.
